Description
The William Roper House on East Battery Street in Charleston. Built for the wealthy cotton planter William Roper in 1837 it actually sits on 2 full lots and a piece of a third. When constructed in 1837 it was the first mansion to be built on this East side of the Charleston Battery after the high sea wall was completed. Designed in the Greek Revival Style it is 2 stories tall with 5 Ionic Columns and a single rather than double piazza. Mr. Roper died of malaria in 1845. After the Civil War the home was sold to Rudolph Siegling. In 1929 the founder of the Guggenheim Museum in New York purchased the property. Finally in 1968 the wealthy investment banker Richard Jenrettte purchased the property and did extensive restorations. It is currently under further restoration and is rumored to be open to the public as a tour home in the near future.
