A 42-pounder cannon juts through a gun port at Fort Sumter National Monument in Charleston, South Carolina. This particular cannon lies just inside the main entrance. Tourists must travel by boat from Charleston or Mt. Pleasant to reach Fort Sumter, considered the site of the opening battle of the Civil War. Confederate troops opened fire on the fort on April 12, 1861.
