Description
This charming house of worship was constructed as a chapel of ease for the St. James Santee Parish in 1890.
This parish was established by the Church England in 1706, the first parish to be established outside of Charleston, for French Huguenots who arrived to the area in 1687 — the area was known as French Santee.
As many of you may already know, a chapel of ease was secondary religious structure in the parish that was meant to be easier to travel to for everyday services. The main parish church was built in 1768 and is known by several names: St. James Santee, Brick Church at Wambaw, or simply Brick Church, and is located on the Old Kings Highway roughly eight miles away towards Georgetown.
This chapel was the sixth church constructed within the parish and became the official parish church after the Civil War as the plantation system that made the area wealthy started to decline. Planters left their plantations and their families moved to more populated areas, such as McClellanville. Regular services are still held in the chapel and the old Brick Church holds one service per year.
