Description
Custom Snake Gates by Philip Simmons
The “rattlesnake gates” were built in 1960 by Philip Simmons from a design by architectural historian Samuel Stoney. The coiled snake is a reference to the Revolutionary War flag designed by Christopher Gadsen--the “Don’t tread on me” flag. Simmons took pains to make this a lifelike snake. Venomous. Forked tongue. Sinister eyes. Seven rattles. You can count them. The house was once owned by Gadsen’s daughter and her husband. from my life as an ironworks scholar.
