Description
This is one of the many typical vistas of the Charleston Harbor. Many of the most famous early views of Charleston are, in fact, portrayed from the East Cooper shoreline. In this early 1700s Spanish image entitled A View of Charles Town the Capital of South Carolina in North America at least 16 vessels are shown, representing the side variety of boats that could be seen on any given day in the harbor. Frigates, schooners, sloops, and other craft were said to "ply incessantly" along the local waterways, according to Royal Governor James Glen in 1751.
